Part of the Goldfish family - Ryukin Goldfish strike a unique silhouette in the aquarium, with their thick, round body and a characteristic hump behind their pointed heads. Their distinctive shape, rich colouration and robust nature makes them an excellent beginner fish and a fine addition to any fish tank or garden pond.

Goldfish were originally cultivated in China over 1000 years ago, and over the centuries, have been developed into many different types all over the world. The Ryukin Goldfish is considered to be a mutation of the Wakin Goldfish, and takes its name from the Ryuku Islands through which it first arrived in Japan.

Ryukin Goldfish have a thick body and their pointed heads sit beneath a distinctive hump to create a shape that stands out among other Goldfish. Their richly-coloured scales range from red through to red and white, and they have long flowing fins that complement their round bodies.

Ryukin Goldfish are generally calm and peaceful tankmates and do well in groups, but can become dominant or aggressive when paired with weaker, slower fish.

We recommend feeding your Ryukin Goldfish Pellets or Flakes. Spirulina Flakes and Algae Wafers will provide valuable variety to their diet. We’ve found that Ryukins, like all Goldfish, enjoy eating Duckweed, which is easy to grow in your aquarium and is available from Scapeshop.com.au.

These fish are best-suited to water temperatures ranging from 8-24 degrees celsius, and as they produce lots of waste, we recommend good filtration and plenty of plants to oxygenate and clean the water, as well as enriching their lives and supplementing their diets.
